I began working on recycled silk sari pieces from India a few years ago. I enjoyed the patterns on the fabrics, the feel of the silk, and the stories imagined from their past lives. When our daughter was very young, my husband went to graduate school and I went to work. Our daughter when to a family day care situation with a lovely family from India. So my attachments to these fabrics are on many levels. I was embroidering on one of these small pieces on a plane trip and realized they no longer hand out blankets and I was freezing. I decided on that trip to use all of these sari embroideries to make myself a Traveling Companion to take wherever I go! And so… long story, long project… about two years later I completed my Traveling Companion.
Recycled silk sari pieces with hand stenciled images and hand embroidery. Layered with muslin and linen backing to create a “quilted” wrap completed with kantha stitching in various colors. Hand twisted fringe on ends. All earth tone colors created by and for the artist!
